SUMMARY:10th International Alvar Aalto Design Seminar – Checkpoint
DESCRIPTION:The 10th International Alvar Aalto Design Seminar – Checkpoint will be held on Tuesday\, June 10\, 2025\, in Jyväskylä. 30 years ago\, at the first design seminar in 1995\, the focus was on design quality and craftsmanship\, and the user interfaces of the time were Windows95 and Nokia’s early mobile phones. \nToday\, in 2025\, it is the use of AI in design that gets people talking\, while authenticity\, humanity and craftsmanship are emerging as counterforces. On this occasion we will also pay homage to renewable heritage and tradition: this year marks 90 years since the founding of Artek\, and 13 Aalto buildings have been nominated for inscription in 2026 as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We look with optimism towards a diverse future of sustainable development in design.

SUMMARY:The Shakers: A World in the Making
DESCRIPTION:In summer 2025\, the Vitra Design Museum will present a major exhibition exploring the American Shaker community and their unique design culture. Established in the eighteenth century\, the Shakers were a free church community that embraced social equality\, communal property\, and pacifism\, viewing labour and design as crucial expressions of their faith. The Shakers’ radically simple\, functional objects have had a profound influence on modern design\, inspiring generations of artists\, architects\, and designers up to the present day. The exhibition will showcase a wide range of Shaker furniture\, architecture\, tools\, and commercial goods\, drawn primarly from Shaker Museum\, Chatham (USA). Works by contemporary artists and designers enter into dialogue with the historic exhibits\, reflecting on the Shakers’ enduring relevance. \nAn exhibition organised by the Vitra Design Museum\, the Milwaukee Art Museum\, the Institute of Contemporary Art Philadelphia\, and the Wüstenrot Foundation. \nIn collaboration with Shaker Museum

DESCRIPTION:In the last three decades\, the design field has undergone significant transformations\, marked by diversification\, complexity\, and integration with various sectors\, including technology. Initially focused on form and function\, design has since expanded to drive social\, ecological\, cultural\, and digital innovations. Two major revolutions—digital and service—have reshaped the discipline. Today\, faced with environmental challenges and advancing AI\, designers are at a critical juncture\, necessitating the reevaluation of practices and theories. This includes adopting multidisciplinary\, innovative\, and ethically responsible approaches. \nThe 2025 Spring Cumulus Conference in Nantes will explore new design ethics through six tracks: Care\, City\, Food\, Digital\, Media\, and Design & Entrepreneurship. This event will gather 500 participants from more than 70 countries worldwide to celebrate the 35th anniversary of Cumulus. \nSince 1999\, L’École de design Nantes Atlantique has been an active contributor to Cumulus Association\, the largest network in art\, design\, and media education.
