Torino (Italy) – More than 100 delegates of the World Design Organization (WDO)™, including representatives of private sector companies, educational institutions, promotional and professional organizations, united in Torino, Italy to demonstrate their commitment to help achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals, by design.
During its 30th General Assembly held from 14-15 October 2017 at the UN Conference Centre (ITCILO) in Torino, Italy, the world body for industrial design and its member organizations from over 40 different countries, signed on to a World Design Agenda to help deliver on the SDGs, using design to bring new perspectives to some of the world’s deeply complex social problems.
WDO has a critical role to play in terms of bringing the importance of the SDGs to the design community and advocating their adoption and implementation as a guideline against which designers around the world can align their efforts to design a better world.
“At WDO, we are ready to collaborate and build a powerful coalition for change, working in partnership with the wider design community and multi-stakeholders, and using the SDGs as a framework (for success),” noted WDO President Luisa Bocchietto. “Our World Design Agenda is a plan of action for 2030 that helps us to establish common ground and speak as a unified voice when accessing decision makers and multilateral institutions, such as the United Nations.”
WDO’s World Design Agenda is meant to be a living document, one that will become increasingly defined with each passing term as the organization develops its expertise and begins to appreciate the impact the design community can have on specific SDGs. Ultimately, it strives to enhance the value of corporate sustainability and social responsibility, encouraging design solutions that improve health services and access to clean water, that reduce emissions and tackle resource inefficiencies threatening the climate, and that help create inclusive, resilient, and sustainable cities.
