National Center for Industrial Design and Innovation 2050 LAB has completed the interior design of a new modular passenger car for comfortable nighttime travel. The work was carried out for JSC “TMH” – the largest manufacturer of railway transport in Russia and the CIS.

The new car provides passengers on the upper and lower berths with an equal level of comfort. Moreover, 2050.LAB design team has come up with solutions that improve passengers’ privacy.

“Passengers can now sit comfortably on top berths. Luggage and shoes are put into a special module divided into compartments. Each traveler is provided with a table and curtains to isolate himself from neighbors. For those traveling in pairs, special “windows” have been made in the partitions between adjacent compartments, allowing them to easily communicate with each other,” says Alexey Sharshakov, chief designer of 2050.LAB.

The design team has also developed many custom scenarios. “For example, lower berths can be transformed into two chairs and a table between them. This option was previously available only to passengers travelling on the lower side berths, allowing them to communicate face-to-face, ” says Aleksey Sharshakov. The possibility of traveling in a large company has also been preserved – the carriage has several special “living” compartments.

Modular car is a new type of a sleeper car. It is based on the so-called “T” car platform, where interior space is increased by 11% in comparison with the standard one. The interior is dominated by natural, calm shades with the use of the latest materials. When developing the carriage, convenient solutions were created for both individual travel and family travel.
