DUPONT UNDERGROUND: RETHINK DUPONT

August 20 - December 4
WA United States
Building on the success of our first international competition, the Dupont Underground is launching a second competition: Re-Think Dupont Circle. One of the key public spaces in Pierre Charles L’Enfant’s famous urban plan for the nations capital, Dupont Circle was not built out until the late 19th century and has not seen a significant redesign since the 1940’s when the automobile was ascendant. We feel it’s well past time to rethink Dupont Circle as a social, human-centered, public space.

THE BIOMIMICRY GLOBAL DESIGN CHALLENGE

September 1, 2020 - September 1, 2021
United States
The Biomimicry Global Design Challenge calls for design concepts addressing any issue(s) outlined by the Sustainable Development Goals. We know that the SDGs are vast and expand across many subject areas, but this diversity means there are also just as many solutions out there waiting to be discovered. Successful teams will define a concrete, well researched area of focus for their design efforts and apply the core concepts and methods of biomimicry in developing a solution. We are especially interested in projects that go beyond familiar approaches by identifying unique leverage points for change, removing barriers to the adoption and spread of existing solutions, and/or clearly demonstrating how biomimicry can lead to new, novel, or more effective solutions. MAISON POC – CIRCULAR ECONOMY

September 9 - November 15
Lille Metropole, France
Recipient of three founding values — zero waste, frugality and reuse — this Maison POC wishes above all to be an example of how to make an event space sustainable, accessible and eco-responsible. Located in the former school of the Couvent des Clarisses in Roubaix, the Maison is taking part in the circular rehabilitation and transitional occupation project Saisons Zéro (Zero Seasons) run by the Zerm collective and the City Council of Roubaix. The Maison POC is not intended as a showcase for solutions, but as a catalyst for positive practices that raise and promote the right questions more than the right answers, the whys and wherefores more than the expected results. Around sixty projects from POC holders in Lille and elsewhere — presented as experiments in systems, with a particular focus on citizen participation and co-design — are in dialogue with the practices of international designers. A living laboratory, evolving and open to all, it will be built over time thanks to the active participation of project leaders and the public.

SENS FICTION

September 16 - November 15
Lille Metropole, France

Ramy Fischler, designer and founder of RF studio, and Scott Longfellow, director of the studio’s Office of Uses, analyse the role of fiction and futurism in imagining the uses of tomorrow. They explore the subject through an exhibition and a creation laboratory located in the Tripostal. The exhibition uses a designer’s perspective to highlight the fictions and futuristic stories of the industrial era that inspired and even shaped our daily uses. Literature, cinematography and designers’ projects are brought together thematically, revealing to visitors our ways of being in the world, particularly in relation to technology. Original works of fiction created for the exhibition extend these connections and explore the role of design and designers in the construction of desirable fantasies.

MAISON POC – PUBLIC ACTION

September 24 - November 15
Lille Metropole, France
Housed in Lille at the Biotope, the new headquarters of La Métropole Européenne de Lille (MEL), the Maison Action Publique’s activities take place in the spaces of the MEL’s public policies laboratory in an exhibition area and of course online. Today The Maison POC Action Publique is about thirty projects that testify to the vitality of the action of the MEL and the municipalities as well as their capacity to rethink their ways of doing things. They deal with subjects such as food waste, preparing the city for heat waves or the temporary occupation of vacant spaces. These projects are both responses to problems that are taking shape in the metropolitan area and sometimes more widely in our society, but are also catalysts for changes within the public administration. They enable us to rethink the way it works, the ways of doing things and of intervening with the idea of producing renewed public action, or even new forms of public action, more in tune with the needs of our time.
