Montreal (Canada) – Let’s face it. When it comes to explaining who we are and what we do for a living, there are times when defining our industry can be complex. What is industrial design today and what does an industrial designer do? These are the two simple questions that will ignite a global dialogue.
It’s time to renew the ID of ID
Starting in June 2014, the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design (Icsid) will embark on a yearlong campaign to involve the industrial design community in a global movement to help redefine the industry. What is industrial design today? How has it changed? How do we define ourselves?
To support this initiative, this year’s theme for World Industrial Design Day (29 June 2014) is “Renew ID”.
A new kind of design practise has emerged in an age of information and service economy where the new scope of industrial design has expanded rapidly in recent years to go beyond its industrial base and become more inclusive of other disciplines.
Over the course of the next few months, Icsid will call upon design professionals, students, agencies, industry associations and promotional organisations to host a series of events (i.e. lectures, roundtables, town hall meetings, etc.) in support of the “Renew ID” initiative.

About World Industrial Design Day
World Industrial Design Day (WIDD) is observed annually on 29 June in recognition of the profession of industrial design. First declared in 2007 on the occasion of Icsid’s 50th anniversary, World Industrial Design Day has been established with the aim of promoting awareness of the profession of industrial design and facilitating collaborations that help to highlight the impact of industrial design on economic, social, cultural and environmental quality of life throughout the world.
