Intersections of design, democracy and ethics

In this conversation, two perspectives on the future of democracy through design come together: Anna Whicher, Head of Design Policy at PDR, and Philipp Cartier, part of the team of Redesigning Democratic Representation, an initiative within the World Design Capital 2026 programme. This session explores the need to decolonize design ethics by examining the profession’s impact on the environment and marginalized communities. In this talk Raja discusses the ethical challenges faced by designers in today’s fast-paced innovation environment, highlighting how the current system often prioritizes quick production over long-term consequences and environmental sustainability. Through examples from speculative fiction, Raja emphasizes the importance of preserving indigenous knowledge and cultural practices in design, advocating for a more ethical approach that values biological benefits and community well-being while challenging colonial thinking in industrial design practices.
