World Industrial Design Day 2024 celebrated the theme of let's get emotional, engaging the global design community in a month-long social media campaign that explored the power of emotion and empathy in design. On 29 June, designers from across the globe came together to host a diverse array of events, workshops and gatherings.

The Future We Want

Under the theme of The Future We Want, World Industrial Design Day 2023 explored what kind of future designers around the world are striving towards. In early 2023, WDO launched a public call to gather future-focused insights, ideas and actions from across the global design community. Taking inspiration from these contributions, WDO developed an online comic entitled The Future We Want, which was shared on 29 June.

Let's talk: leadership

World Industrial Design Day 2022 marked the 65th anniversary of WDO. Reflecting on more than six decades of championing design for a better world, WDO celebrated WIDD 2022 under the theme of leadership, recognizing the many ways in which designers are leading the charge towards a better future. On 28-29 June, we hosted a 24-hour virtual event, let’s talk: leadership. Highlighting diverse leadership perspectives and insights, this virtual event featured conversations with top design leaders and thinkers as they discussed how they are mobilizing change and driving impact in their communities and around the world.

Let's talk: diversity

WDO celebrated the theme with a 24-hour virtual event entitled let's talk: diversity. Designers, educators and experts on diversity and inclusion shared their stories, points of view and actionable steps we can all take to continue to design for a better world.
Our theme this year was celebrated in across the world with virtual exhibits, talks, competitions and activations on social media. Even beyond, 20 June, we continue to encourage designers everywhere to turn a critical eye towards their designs, and reflect on the steps they can take to challenge the status quo and contribute to a more diverse, inclusive industry.

Design for everyday life

World Industrial Design Day 2020 celebrated the amazing power of ‘Design for Everyday Life’. At a time when most were sheltering-in-place due to the COVID-19 pandemic and most WIDD events were postponed or transitioned online, WDO developed a virtual campaign for our community to take the #WIDD2020 pledge. Unified by a collective commitment to design for a better world, video pledges were submitted from around the globe, engaging our community in a unique dialogue about our relationship to the everyday products we use and/or design.

Responsible Consumption and Production

WDO and the team at Global Goals Jam have joined forces to launch the first World Industrial Design Day 2019 Mini-Jam (designathon) under the theme of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production. The global design community was invited to explore local challenges and identify ways design can help ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns by “doing more and better with less”.

Good Health and Well‑being

In alignment with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) #3: Good Health and Well‑being, World Industrial Design Day™ (WIDD) 2018 explored ways design can help improve our physical, social, mental and emotional development. Participants were encouraged to showcase ways in which industrial design can incite happier, healthier and more enjoyable lifestyles by tackling across section of socioeconomic factors.

Think outside the box

One of the ways in which industrial design can make a positive difference in the world is through sustainable design. Inspired by the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goal #12: Responsible Consumption and Production, we asked designers to 'think outside the box' and showcase how they are designing more sustainable products.
