In celebration of World Industrial Design Day 2026, WDO is once again bringing the global design community together for let’s talk resilience.

Streaming live on WDO’s YouTube channel on 29 June from 8:00 AM EDT / 12:00 PM UTC, the event will feature a dynamic series of online sessions led by design leaders from around the world. Through shared perspectives, emerging practices and critical conversations, the programme will explore how resilience is shaping the future of design across disciplines, communities and industries.

From discarded textiles to stadium seats, Crafted Liberation leverages material innovation to honour Iranian women’s resilience in the pursuit of gender equality. Vice President of the Taiwan Design Research Institute, with extensive experience in industry consulting and design promotion. In 2020, she established the Service Innovation Division, leading her team in driving public and local design innovation.

Since 2020, she has spearheaded the “Design Movement on Campus,” integrating design thinking to transform school environments. This initiative received the Japan Good Design Best 100 Gold Award and Grand Award, significantly impacting Taiwan’s educational spaces.

Dedicated to advancing public service innovation, she has contributed to renovation projects across various sectors, including education, transportation, healthcare, tourism, industrial parks, social housing, elections, fire safety equipment, and public pictogram systems. Since 2023, she has collaborated with the Ministry of Economic Affairs to launch the “Design Movement for Public” initiative, aimed at optimizing public spaces and reshaping urban aesthetics.

In the realm of social innovation, she initiated the “T22 Revitalization Program with Regional Characteristic Design,” revitalizing industries in Yingge, Beitou, Hualien, and Changhua. She also oversees the Taiwan Design Expo, working with different cities each year to promote design aesthetics, and has served as the program director of the Taiwan Creative Expo for nine years. Her contributions have been instrumental in advancing the cultural and creative industries, fostering innovative business models, and expanding market engagement.

Dr. Wen-Ying Chang

With a steadfast commitment to technological innovation, cultural content, and industrial development, Dr. Chang possesses extensive experience spanning government policy, research institutes, and industry practices. Previously served as Vice President of the Taiwan Creative Content Agency (TAIC-CA), Director of the Office of Science and Technology Advocacy (OSTA) under the Executive Yuan, and Director of the Creative Industries Center at MIC, Institute for Information Industry. Dr. Chang has a proven track record of driving technology applications, digital transformation, and cultural content innovation. Additionally, she has served as a member of the International Advisory Committee for the National Palace Museum and the Cultural and Creative Industries Promotion Committee of the Tainan City Government. In her current role as the Vice President of Research and Development at the Tai-wan Design Research Institute (TDRI), Dr. Chang focuses on design-driven innovation, AI applications, and cross-domain integration.

Designing for Climate-vulnerable Communities with Dr. Pamela Cajilig

In this session, Dr. Pamela Cajilig draws on her ongoing work with WDO and the Design Center of the Philippines as part of the Interdesign Siargao Island programme to reflect on how resilience is understood and practiced. Against a backdrop of increasing climate instability, she explores how participatory, interdisciplinary design can strengthen the capacity for adaptation, recovery and long-term resilience in climate-vulnerable communities such as Siargao Island. She also led UBC’s strategy for antiracism and inclusive higher education, and has been involved in several national initiatives for higher education in Canada. Between 2015 and 2018, Professor Mukherjee was Dean of the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies at York University, Toronto. Norma Iglesias-Prieto is a transborder scholar with over 40 years of experience in cultural studies. A founder of COLEF and professor at SDSU, she developed the concept of borderism to explore diverse border experiences. Her research focuses on creativity as a form of resistance and on visual arts as a means to reconstruct the social fabric. She has authored five books and curated major cross-border exhibitions, including Point of Entry (2016) and Chicano/a/x Printmaking (2020). Combining theory, media production, and activism, her work highlights marginalized narratives and the complex dynamics of the Tijuana–San Diego border.

Alita Escobedo

Alita Escobedo is a lighting and stage designer from Tijuana. Since 2011, her work has been showcased at venues like Mexico’s National Auditorium, Tel Aviv Opera House, and Havana’s Gran Teatro. She won first place in Japan’s The Perfect Light contest (2018) and received Mexico’s FONCA grant (2022–2023). Selected for the International Mentorship Program by Scenography Today, she authored Women in Entertainment Lighting in collaboration with Light Collective. Her work blends scenic technology and gender perspective, positioning her as a rising figure in the international lighting design community.
