World Industrial Design Day 2009

In celebration of World Industrial Design Day 2009, the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design (Icsid) invited designers from around the globe to initiate events reflecting the theme ‘Industrial Design: the product of human creativity’.

One distinctive attribute that separates humans from every other species on earth is our capacity to be creative. Our insatiable imagination and curiosity over millions of years has made possible a steady step by step progression of questioning, exploring, learning, inventing and designing the world we live in.

Industrial design has evolved into the profession that creates and shapes our modern world. Industrial designers of our future will draw on the past to create a better world for us all – shaping everything from the products we use to the houses we live in and the buildings we work under.

About the poster competition
To celebrate World Industrial Design Day 2009, design students from Icsid Member Schools invited to design a poster that illustrates the importance of industrial design to humankind. Either a creative illustration or an illustration of the design of a product, the poster had to capture the theme “Industrial Design – The product of human creativity”.

About the design
“The purpose of this poster is to represent nature as a central concept, which is the beginning of observation and a creative engine for humanity. Based on this, one can interpret the tree as an organic element which includes the study of materials, shapes and structure. Under these three parameters is the relationship between humans and their creations, referring to the constructive and creative process of industrial design.

“Appropriating and deconstructing ‘the tree’ generates a new identity, which was created with real materials and merged digitally. Nature, represented by the tree, symbolises the life cycle, which explains metaphorically the process of creating a product.”
